Synopsis of The Conspiracy to Assassinate Jesus Christ
Lucius Aelius Sejanus, an equestrian born in humble surroundings, is appointed sole commander of the Praetorian Guard, beginning in 15 A.D., and molds it into the elite kingmaker force that plays a significant role in Sejanus’ rise to power.
Sejanus becomes Emperor Tiberius’ exclusive confidant through a combination of limitless energy, grim efficiency, boundless flattery, and a servile temperament before the emperor. Sejanus’ power is further fueled by the fierce animosity which divides Rome’s aristocracy as well as by Tiberius’ own weaknesses and paranoia. Tiberius eventually retires to Capri, leaving the day-to-day operations of the empire in Sejanus’ hands.
Like Sejanus, Jesus Christ is a teenager when Tiberius Augustus is inaugurated. Jesus’ teachings and his actions in the Temple of Jerusalem bring him to the attention of the established hierocracy who views him as a troublemaker that could upset the delicate balance of power between Judea and Rome. They seek to execute him.
In The Conspiracy to Assassinate Jesus Christ , Sejanus is driven by complex motivations to covet the throne and conspires to eliminate all the Julio-Claudian heirs-apparent that stand in his way. His plan for emperorship requires involvement of the local leadership of Judea.
